MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. - The Trojans returned to Kornegay Arena Friday afternoon, hosting Belmont Abbey. The Trojans won the match in three sets.
GAME INFORMATION
The Trojans jumped out to a 6-2 lead early in set one. Not wanting to fall behind, the Crusaders rebounded by scoring three unanswered points, bringing themselves within one from the lead, 6-5. The teams then traded points bringing the score to 10-8, Trojans. Beginning with a ball handling error by Belmont Abbey, the Trojans scored six points in a row, capped off by a block from
Nafsika Papavasileiou and
Amara Eziakonwa. Putting the Trojans up, 16-8. Scoring four of the next six points, the Crusaders brought themselves to within six of the lead, 18-12. The Trojans responded by going on a 6-1 run, extending their lead to 24-13. With their back against the wall the Crusaders strung together six points, but fell, 25-19.
Set two began with back and forth action, a trend that continued through the match point. With a Crusaders lead of 10-9, they added four more, extending their lead to 14-9. After exchanging a total of seven points, the Crusaders had a six point lead, 18-12. The Trojans, looking to switch the momentum, scored five out of six points, closing the Crusaders lead to just two points, 19-17. After a point for Belmont Abbey, Mount Olive added three more points, tying the game at twenty a piece. With the Trojans leading and match point on the line, 24-23, the Crusaders scored, tying the game once again.
Ele'sia Williams then smacked two kills in a row, closing out set two, 26-24.
Back and forth action carried into the third set. The Trojans scored four answered points for the second time to go up 13-8. The teams then exchanged points, leading to the Trojans being ahead, 17-14. Over the next six points, each team collected three, bringing the score to 20-17, Trojans. Looking to make it close and avoid being swept, the Crusaders brought themselves to within one of the lead, 22-21. The Trojans responded by scoring three points in a row to close out the set, and the match, 3-0.
KEY MOMENT
The key moment came in the second set. With the Crusaders challenging, the Trojans proved to be resilient. Winning the set 26-24, going on to sweep the match.
