No. 16 Trojan Baseball Defeats No. 4 North Greenville In Series-Opening Doubleheader

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. - The No. 16 University of Mount Olive baseball team took the series-opening doubleheader from No. 4 North Greenville University, taking game one 4-2 and the second 10-3 in Conference Carolinas action Saturday afternoon at Scarborough Field. UMO improves to 14-4 overall 11-3 in conference, while North Greenville goes to 16-5, 14-4.

GAME ONE INFORMATION
The game began scoreless after the first, but offense was brewing for North Greenville in the second. An RBI-single drove in the first run of the game while a fielder's choice bunt allowed the second run to come in, giving NGU the 2-0 lead. 

Mount Olive was able to get one run back in the bottom half of the inning after a throw on a stolen base attempt from Jack Casbarro went into the outfield and allowed Vito Patierno to come in from third.

Gunner Tolston plated the tying run in the third on an RBI-double down the left field line.

The deciding blow came in the fifth when Patierno doubled down the right field line scoring both Joe Mason and Blake McLean to put UMO in front 4-2, a score they did not relinquish. 

TROJAN LEADERS
Vito Patierno led the Trojan offensive  with two RBI on a 2-for-3 day. Reed Parris (1-1) went the complete game allowing a pair of runs off two hits and struck out eight.

NORTH GREENVILLE LEADERS
Douglas Angeli collected an RBI to lead the way for the Crusaders.

KEY MOMENT
The key moment came in the fifth when Patierno's RBI-double gained UMO an 4-2 lead, an advantage NGU was never able to overcome.

GAME TWO INFORMATION
Game two became an offensive explosion from the beginning as the Trojans pushed home four runs in the first. All but one run came in via an RBI base hit as, Patierno, Casbarro, and Aaron Hedgepeth collected RBI in the inning.

Following the 4-0 lead in the first, UMO added a pair of runs in the second.

The Crusaders were able to strike for a pair of runs themselves in the sixth to draw the deficit to 6-2. 

Zack Smith helped the Mount Olive cause in the bottom half however with a three-run blast to right that secured the Trojan victory as the momentum surged over with the Trojans at that moment.

NGU added one run in the seventh and Mount Olive countered in the bottom holding the seven-run advantage for the 10-3 win in game two.

TROJAN LEADERS
Multiple Trojans had extra RBI days as Zack Smith (3), Vito Patierno (2), and Jack Casbarro (2) all led the team's offensive outburst. Hunter Stevens (5-0) picked up the win going six complete allowing two runs off five hits and struck out four.

NORTH GREENVILLE LEADERS
Josh Senter collected an RBI to lead the way for the Crusaders.

KEY MOMENT
The key moment came in the sixth when Zack Smith belted a three-run home run to give Mount Olive a 9-2 lead.

ON DECK
Mount Olive will complete the four-game series with North Greenville Sunday at 1 p.m. at Scarborough Field.
