No. 16 Mount Olive Opens Season With An 8-5 Victory Over Queens

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. - The No. 16 University of Mount Olive baseball team defeated Queens University (NC) 8-5 in non-conference action Wednesday afternoon at Scarborough Field on opening day for the Trojans. UMO improves to 1-0 overall, while Queens falls to 1-3.

INSIDE THE SCORE
Mount Olive fell behind from the start as Queens pushed home two runs in the top of the first and took the early lead. The Trojans responded with three runs in the bottom half as Stephen Baughan doubled to left scoring Gunner Tolston and Blake McLean. Zack Smith scored the final run of the inning with and RBI-double to push UMO a head 3-2.

In the second McLean tripled home two to push Mount Olive out by three.

The two squads then exchanged solo runs in the middle innings and UMO held an 8-3 lead heading into the seventh. 

Queens managed to push home single runs in the seventh and ninth but the Trojans held off the comeback and took the win 8-5.

MOUNT OLIVE LEADERS
The Trojans were led by Stephen Baughan who went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Hunter Stevens (1-0) got the win in relief for Mount Olive throwing one complete inning and struck out one Royal batter.

QUEENS LEADERS
The Royals were led by Harris with a team-high two hits and one RBI. 

KEY MOMENT
The key moment of the game came in the bottom of the first when UMO pushed home three runs to gain the lead,one they did not surrender, and add two more in the second to take firm control of the game.

UP NEXT
Mount Olive will hit the road as they travel to Charlotte, N.C. to take on the Royals in their home park on February 14 at 1 p.m.
