MOUNT OLIVE, North Carolina - The University of Mount Olive women's basketball team defeated Chowan University 73-63 on Tuesday afternoon in Conference Carolinas women's basketball action. UMO improves to 3-2, 3-2 on the season, while the Chowan Hawks fall to 2-4, 2-4.
INSIDE THE SCORE
Chowan University took the first six points of the contest leading 6-2 at the 7:52 mark. Mount Olive responded with a 6-0 run as Teliyah Owens shot a three-pointer to help the Trojans take the lead 10-8 with 2:28 remaining in the quarter. UMO continued to extend their lead by six points ending the first quarter 14-8.
In the second quarter, Kiara Jackson and Azariah Fields helped the Trojans go on a 5-2 run to increase their lead 19-10 at the 7:08 mark. Both teams put up a good fight, but Chowan outscored Mount Olive 15-6 to tie the game 25-25 with 2:34 remaining in the second quarter. The Trojans were able to slightly pull away, finishing in the first half leading by one 30-29.
The third quarter started with a Trojan basket by Ivanda Hudjakove to help the Trojans remain in the lead 32-29. Chowan continued to fight as they went on a 7-4 run to tie the game 36-36 for the second time, but Mount Olive managed to pull away to extend their lead once again 52-49, heading into the final frame.
In the final quarter, both teams were back and forth for the first three minutes of the game as Chowan took the lead by three points. The Trojans were able to come back in less than a minute as Teliyah Owens made another three-pointer, which helped UMO take the lead 60-58 with 5:33 left in the game. Mount Olive found their hot hand to finish strong as they went on a 13-5 run to end the game with a comfortable ten-point lead and took home the 73-63 victory.
MOUNT OLIVE LEADERS
Azariah Fields yet again leads the Trojans with 18 points and four assists. Kiara Jackson, Teliyah Owens, and Ivanda Hudjakova, all had double-digit scoring afternoons with 16 and 11 points.
CHOWAN LEADERS
The Hawks were led by Aniah Patterson, Demetria Bland, and Keibra Hopkins with 17 and 13 points.
KEY MOMENT
The game's key moment came in the final quarter as Trojans Teliyah Owens helped the Trojans get back in the lead. Mount Olive came together and finished the remainder of the game strong as they went on a 13-5 run to take home the 73-63 win over Chowan University.
