MOUNT OLIVE, North Carolina - The University of Mount Olive women's basketball team defeated North Greenville University 79-60 in Conference Carolinas action in Mount Olive, N.C. Saturday afternoon. UMO improves to 2-2 overall and 2-2 in conference, while NGU falls to 2-1, 2-1.
INSIDE THE SCORE
Mount Olive took the first points of the contest, and North Greenville was able to tie the score at six a few moments later. The Trojans responded with a 12-8 run to take an 18-14 lead to end the first quarter.
In the second quarter, the Trojans build off their lead and never took their foot off the gas. NGU never saw an opportunity to tie the game or take the lead as Mount Olive took over and increased their lead to fourteen points ending the first half 40-26.
The third quarter started with three Trojan baskets by Kiara Jackson, Azariah Fields, and Teliyah Owns, extending their lead by twenty points. NGU put up a good fight, but Mount Olive continued to pull away as they went on a 17-15 run heading into the final frame leading 57-41.
In the final quarter, the Trojans kept their momentum going since the game's start, which resulted in Mount Olive yet again outscoring NGU 22-19. The Trojans ended the game with a comfortable lead and took home the 79-60 victory.
MOUNT OLIVE LEADERS
Azariah Fields led the Trojans with 18 points and five assists. Kiara Jackson, Laila Harris, Ivanka Hudjakova, and Ayanna Cotten all had double-digit scoring afternoons with 17 and 12 points, respectively.
NORTH GREENVILLE LEADERS
The Crusaders were led by Journey Muhammed and Kira Bell Fritz with 13 and 10 points.
KEY MOMENT
The key moment of the game came in the second quarter when Mount Olive took over and increased their lead by fourteen points to take the lead the reminder of the game.
