MOUNT OLIVE, North Carolina - The No. 7 University of Mount Olive baseball team defeated Chowan University in the final two games of the three-game series at Scarborough Field on Saturday. UMO improves to 15-2 overall and 6-0 in conference, while Chowan falls to 5-12, 0-6.
INSIDE THE SCORE GAME 1
Mount Olive opened the scoring in the bottom of the first on an RBI-single from Joe Mason. The Trojans went onto add five more runs before Chowan answered with a pair of runs in the fifth but that would be all they could manage as the offensive outburst came back out for UMO.
The bottom of the fifth saw eight more runs come home and seal the win for Mount Olive in a 14-2 game one win.
MOUNT OLIVE LEADERS
Hunter Stevens (4-0) got the win for the Trojans going six complete allowing two runs and struck out 11. Zack Smith led the offense going 2-for-3 with three RBI.
KEY MOMENT
The key moment of the game came when UMO scored its first run of the game as the lead was never surrendered.
INSIDE THE SCORE GAME 2
Game two saw the Hawks take an early 1-0 lead in the first but it was short-lived as UMO regained the advantage in the second on RBI-base hits by Dusty Baker and James Smibert and Mount Olive led 2-1.
Mount Olive went onto add single runs in the fourth and fifth before having a three-run sixth and a big seven-run seventh that put the Trojans up 14-1. Chowan added one run in the eighth but were shut down once again and UMO took the final game by the same score as game one, 14-2, and took the series 3-0.
MOUNT OLIVE LEADERS
Caleb Irwin (4-0) got the win for the Trojans in game two going seven complete allowing a run off four hits and struck out six. Matt Stokes led UMO with three RBI on the heels of a 2-for-4 performance.
KEY MOMENT
The key moment of the game came in the second when Mount Olive gained the lead for the first and final time.
