Baseball Falls To Catawba 13-9 On The Road

GAME RUNDOWN

  • Mount Olive had to dig out of an early hole as Catawba struck for four runs in the bottom of the first off two two-run home runs an jumped out to a 4-0 lead.
  • The Trojans were able to answer in the top of the second on a Justin Lee sacrifice fly to score Justin Carroll and a Blake McLean RBI-single to left and drew a bit closer 4-2.
  • Catawba, however, wasted no time answering back in the bottom half as the belted their third home run of the game in a three-RBI inning and moved out to a five-run advantage.
  • UMO scored a run in the top of the third on a failed pick-off attempt that allowed Jose Lopez to score and bring the Trojans' deficit down to 7-3.
  • The fifth inning finally saw some long ball heroics from the Trojans as Nate Estes and Justin Carroll both went deep and the two-run shot from Carroll made it a one-run ballgame.
  • After holding Catawba off the boards in the bottom half Drew Ellis gave Mount Olive a big boost as he hit a two-run blast in the top of the sixth to give UMO its first lead of the game 8-7.
  • Unfortunately for the Trojans Catawba was ready for a fight and came out swinging for a six-run inning in the bottom of the sixth and took back the lead 13-8.
  • Mount Olive tried to rally as Gunner Tolston hit a solo home run in the top of the ninth but it was not enough as the comeback fell short and the Trojans fell.

KEY STATS

  • Hunter Britt (0-1) got the loss for Mount Olive in relief as he allowed four runs off five hits.
  • Justin Carroll and Drew Ellis both led the Trojans with two-RBI performances from the plate and two runs scored as well.

Up Next

The Trojans will return to Scarborough Field to take on King University in a three-game series Friday-Saturday, that will be highlighted by senior day on Saturday as well as Piggly Wiggly Day at the ballpark. Friday first pitch is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
