No. 12 Men's Lacrosse Suffers First Loss Of Season

Box Score

Nationally 12th-ranked University of Mount Olive saw a three-goal halftime lead disappear as the Trojans fell to No. 30 Lynn University 10-8 in non-conference men's lacrosse Saturday at Amon Field. The loss was the Trojans' first of the season.

Mount Olive (4-1) scored four unanswered goals to overcome an early 2-1 deficit and take a 5-2 lead at the half. Nico Shewey's goal with 28 seconds left in the first quarter put the Trojans back on top and Austin Whitlow assisted on a pair of man-up goals in the second quarter.

Lynn (3-0) came out of the gate to start the third quarter with three goals in the first four minutes to tie the game. Austin Jerhoff, who scored the first goal of the second half for Lynn, scored the tying goal and assisted on Johnny Gavin's goal with 7:21 left in the third quarter, which put the Fighting Knights ahead to stay.

After Lynn built a two-goal lead and capped a 5-0 scoring run on Brian Kiel's goal, Luke Morris answered for Mount Olive with a goal with 1:19 remaining in the quarter to pull the Trojans within 7-6 after three periods. Trojan goalkeeper Ross Bowman's interception of a Fighting Knight pass from behind the net helped set up Morris's goal.

Gavin scored again for Lynn just over three minutes into the fourth quarter, but Brett Kingston scored for Mount Olive with 9:27 left in the contest to draw the Trojans within 8-7. Mikey Urso scored for Lynn three minutes later and the Fighting Knights were able to kill a full minute off the clock after a Trojan slashing penalty with 2:17 remaining. After Urso added an empty net goal for Lynn with 1:02 left, Tyler Feniello answered with a goal off of his own faceoff win seven seconds later, but that was as close as the Trojans would get.

Whitlow finished with three assists for Mount Olive, while Matt Shields scored two goals. Bowman recorded 10 saves.

Urso led all players with three goals for Lynn, which became the first team this season to score in double figures against the Trojans.

Saturday's contest was Mount Olive's last home game until April. The Trojans travel to Wingate, N.C., Wednesday to take on Wingate University in a non-conference match-up. Faceoff is 4 p.m.
