Box Score Matt Shields' steal and goal early in the fourth quarter broke an 8-8 tie and nationally 11th-ranked University of Mount Olive held Rollins College scoreless for the last 14 minutes of the game as the Trojans celebrated Valentine's Day and their home opener with an 11-8 victory over the previously unbeaten Tars in non-conference men's lacrosse Sunday at Amon Field. Shield and Nico Shewey each finished with three goals and an assist.
Mount Olive (2-0) rallied from a pair of two-goal deficits in the first half and saw its own two-goal lead in the third quarter disappear. Shields scored a man-up goal off an assist by Thatcher Clark with 25 seconds left in the third quarter to put the Trojans on top 8-7 going into the fourth quarter. Mount Olive's four goals in the third quarter matched its entire first half total.
Rollins (2-1) forced the fourth tie of the game in the opening minute of the fourth quarter as Morgan Baker scored from the right side with 14:09 left in the contest. The goal would be the Tars' last of the game.
The Tars appeared to thwart a Mount Olive man-up opportunity on a save by goalkeeper Jake Hogan. But Shields caused a turnover with a check on a Rollins defender in the Tars' zone and picked up a ground ball left of the goal. Shields drove to the net uncontested and put the Trojans ahead to stay 9-8 with 10:21 remaining. Shewey added a goal with 6:55 left and Luke Dalman added a man-up goal 65 seconds later for the final score.
Rollins jumped out to a 2-0 lead less than three minutes into the contest, but Shewey got Mount Olive on the board with 10:41 left in the first quarter and Austin Whitlow tied the game two minutes into the second quarter. The Tars built another two-goal lead on goals by Baker and Clay Phillips, but the Trojans would rally to tie the game again. Austin Betros scored with 5:59 left in the first half and Shields' goal with 1:29 remaining sent the two teams into halftime tied 4-4.
Shewey's goal 53 seconds into the second half gave Mount Olive its first lead of the game and Clark scored with exactly 13 minutes remaining to put the Trojans on top 6-4. After the two teams exchanged goals, Rollins tied the game with a pair of goals just six seconds apart. Jake Vonarb scored with 4:49 left in the third quarter, then Alex Petsos won the ensuing faceoff and went to goal untouched.
Ross Bowman finished with 12 saves for Mount Olive, while Hogan had 11 saves for Rollins.
Amon Field felt more like Lambeau Field Sunday with temperatures never getting out of the low 30's.
Sunday's contest was Mount Olive's 2016 home opener and began a four-game homestand. Much warmer temperatures with a forecast high near 60 degrees are in store Wednesday when the Trojans play host to Roberts Wesleyan College in non-conference action. Faceoff is 2 p.m. at Amon Field.
