Box Score Malika Connor scored the equalizer early in the second half, but a late goal was the difference as University of Mount Olive fell to Wingate University 2-1 in non-conference women's soccer Wednesday at Amon Field. Trojan goalkeeper Stephanie McCoy matched a career high with 10 saves and both Wingate goals came off of deflections.
After trailing 1-0 at halftime, Mount Olive (1-2-0) needed just over 90 seconds to even the match. Nichole Poppe crossed the ball from just left of the box and Connor headed the ball just inside the near post to tie the score 1-1 at the 46:34 mark. The goal was the Trojans' lone shot of the second half.
Wingate (2-0-0) regained the lead at 71:33 when Sophie Jendrzejczyk captured a loose ball in front of the goal after McCoy deflected a shot attempt. The Bulldogs scored in the sixth minute of the contest when Macy Franklin put home a ball after McCoy made a save on a corner kick.
Mount Olive was outshot 17-5 for the match, including 12-1 in the second half. Wingate goalkeeper Alexis Jones recorded two saves.
The game-winning goal came just four minutes after Poppe left the match with an injury suffered from a Wingate slide tackle that resulted in a Bulldog yellow card. Three yellow cards were issued against Wingate – all in the second half – including a caution against the Bulldog head coach. Poppe did not return, but is expected to be ready for the Trojans' next match.
Mount Olive concludes its season-opening four-match homestand and plays its Conference Carolinas opener Saturday as the Trojans play host to North Greenville University. Match time is 1 p.m. at Amon Field and will be followed by the Trojan men's soccer team's conference opener against North Greenville at 4 p.m.
