Box Score Nationally 12th-ranked University of Mount Olive trailed by only one goal after the first period, but a 12-goal run broke the game open as the Trojans fell to No. 2 Limestone College 21-5 in Conference Carolinas men's lacrosse Saturday at Amon Field. The loss was the Trojans' first this season by double digits.
Mount Olive (9-4 overall, 3-2 Conference Carolinas) surrendered a pair of goals in the first 72 seconds of the game before Matt Shields put the Trojans on the scoreboard. Limestone scored again, but the Trojans tied the game 3-3 on goals by Jesse Mitchell and Brett Kingston. Kingston also assisted on Shields' goal.
Limestone (13-1, 5-0) built a 4-3 lead on Jordan Saunderson's goal with 2:32 left in the first period, just 18 seconds after Kingston's goal. The Saints outscored the Trojans 6-0 in the second period to build a 10-3 halftime lead and scored the first five goals of the third period before Kingston's goal with 5:07 remaining ended Mount Olive's near 28-minute scoring drought.
Prior to the contest, seniors Cody Dowling, Jake Duarte, Dylan Hickey, Rob Thomas, Alex Tindall and Jon Williams were recognized during Senior Day festivities.
Mount Olive concludes regular season play Saturday as the Trojans travel to Franklin Springs, Ga., to take on Emmanuel in Conference Carolinas action. Face off is at noon.
