Second Period's The Charm Second Straight Game - Trojans Defeat Ohio Valley 23-6

Box Score

Matt Shields scored five of his game-high six goals during a 10-0 run as University of Mount Olive pulled away from a first-period tie for a 23-6 victory over Ohio Valley University in non-conference men's lacrosse Friday at Amon Field. The win was the Trojans' fourth in a row.

After playing to a 2-2 tie in the first period, Mount Olive (6-1) took the lead for good 34 seconds into the second period as Brett Kingston's man-up goal triggered the Trojans' scoring run. Cameron Walsh followed with a goal two minutes later and Matt Shields scored a pair of goals two minutes apart to extend the Trojans' lead to 6-2 with 4:24 remaining before halftime.

The Shields brothers accounted for three goals in the final two minutes as Dan Shields scored with 2:03 remaining. Matt Shields added a goal less than a minute later and scored again with 14 seconds left to give the Trojans a 9-2 lead at the half.

Mount Olive has outscored its last two opponents 16-0 in the second period and has not allowed a second-period goal in its last three games.

A face off violation near the end of the second period led to a man-up goal by Matt Shields just 14 seconds into the third period. Walsh scored his second goal of the game three minutes later and Rob Thomas' goal with 10:42 left capped the run and gave the Trojans a 12-2 lead.

Ohio Valley (1-8) ended its scoring drought on Wesley Berberick's goal with 8:29 left in the third period. Goals by Dan Shields and Vincent Cardella sandwiched a Fighting Scots goal and gave Mount Olive a 14-4 advantage with 6:05 remaining. The margin stayed in double figures the rest of the contest.

Dan Shields added four goals as 13 Trojans put the ball in the back of the net. Two days ago in Mount Olive's 20-3 win over Alderson-Broaddus, 11 different players scored for the Trojans.

Ross Bowman recorded seven saves in 40 minutes, while Dorian Gabrek had six saves in the final 19 minutes.

Mount Olive continues its five-game homestand Tuesday as the Trojans play host to Saint Leo in a non-conference contest. Game time is 2 p.m. at Amon Field.
