Mount Olive Drops Nail-Biter To Erskine 57-56

Jasmine McDonald records her fifth double-double of the season, but the University of Mount Olive fell to Erskine College 57-56 in Conference Carolinas women's basketball Saturday at Due West, S.C.

The first half was a closely contested battle between the Flying Fleet and the Trojans as it saw four ties and 11 lead changes. Mount Olive's largest lead in the opening half came off a McDonald three-pointer with 12:06 giving the Trojans a six point advantage.

Mount Olive headed into halftime with a two point lead 29-27.

In the second half the Trojans did not give up the lead until a Haleigh Spaulding three-pointer gave Erskine their first lead, 44-42 with 11:34 to go. Prior to that Mount Olive's lead grew to as large as five.

In the last eleven minutes of the game both teams saw four ties and seven lead changes in which neither team had higher than a two point lead. The game came down to the final two possessions with seventeen seconds to go in the game.

Joneiqua Gary hit the go-ahead jumper for the University of Mount Olive with 0:17 on the clock to give the Trojans the 56-55 lead. Raygon Hendrix wasted no time as she made a jumper with 0:13 to go to push the Flying Fleet back in front. The Trojans got a last second shot with six seconds to go but it was off the mark and Mount Olive lost a nail bitter to Erskine.

For Mount Olive Katie Paschal was the top scorer with 15 points and five rebounds. McDonald had 13 points and 15 rebounds on her double-double night. Kirksten Mitchell had 10 points as well.

Leading scorer for Erskine College was Hendrix with 18 points. Spaulding finished with nine points.

Mount Olive returns to action Saturday afternoon as the Trojans play host to Belmont Abbey in a Conference Carolinas match-up. Tip-off is 2 p.m. at Kornegay Arena. Saturday's women's and men's basketball doubleheader is part of Fellowship of Christian Athletes Day at Mount Olive. There will be devotions and a guest speaker after the conclusion of the men's basketball game.
