Box Score Ellie Barnes and Alex Wetherholt staked Mount Olive to a two-goal lead less than six minutes into the match and the Trojans went on to a 7-2 victory over Lincoln (Pa.) in non-conference women's soccer Sunday at Amon Field. Jaclyn Thomas scored two goals and an assist, while Maddy Robak and Rae Williams added two assists apiece to spark the Trojans to their first win of the season.
Match time was originally scheduled for 2 p.m., but had to be pushed back two hours due to wet field conditions caused by heavy rain that fell overnight and Sunday morning.
Mount Olive (1-4-1) got on the scoreboard 95 seconds into the match as Alex Wetherholt's cross from the left side went off the Lincoln keeper and Barnes put the ball home inside the right post. Wetherholt followed with a goal of her own at the 5:30 mark after capturing a deflection at the top of the box to give the Trojans a 2-0 advantage.
Lincoln (2-2-1) spoiled Mount Olive's shutout bid at 16:12 when Tara O'Brien converted a penalty kick. The Trojans were called for a foul in the box on a slide tackle as the Lions pulled within 2-1.
Mount Olive responded as Robak recorded the first of her two assists with a service into the top right of the box. Lincoln keeper Chloe Price challenged, but Damilia Brooks was able to loft the ball over Price to extend the Trojans' lead to 3-1 at 28:07.
Thomas notched her first goal of the match at 36:30 after taking a service from Williams and carrying the ball to the top of the 18. Thomas blasted a shot over the keeper and Mount Olive went into halftime with a 4-1 lead.
The Trojans continued to add to their lead in the second half as Carlee Bock scored from the top of the box after a scramble for the ball to make it a 5-1 score at 51:20. Brooks and Robak were credited with a double assist.
Thomas scored her second goal of the match on a one-touch in front of the right post off a cross from Williams in the 67th minute. Thomas assisted on the Trojans' final goal with a cross from the right to Lauren Power, who scored from in front of the left post to give Mount Olive its biggest lead at 7-1 in the 80th minute.
Lincoln closed out the scoring with a buzzer-beater as Alanna Van Ness' 25-yard blast went in just before the final horn sounded.
Mount Olive finished with a season-high 22 shots, 18 of which were on goal. Grice recorded 11 saves for Lincoln. Stephanie McCoy finished with two saves in 84 minutes in goal for the Trojans, while Katie Batson played the final six minutes.
The Trojans notched their highest single-match goal-scoring total since a 7-2 victory at Chowan October 18, 2011. Lincoln defeated Chowan 6-0 Saturday.
Mount Olive resumes Conference Carolinas action Wednesday as the Trojans travel to Wilson, N.C., to take on Barton, now coached by former MOC head women's soccer coach Chris Shaw. Match time is 5 p.m.
