Box Score Hope Perry's goal early in the second half put Mount Olive on the scoreboard, but the Trojans were unable to overcome a three-goal halftime deficit and fell to King 5-1 in Conference Carolinas women's soccer Saturday at Bristol, Tenn. The match was the regular season finale and prevented Mount Olive from qualifying for next week's Conference Carolinas Women's Soccer Tournament, ending the Trojans' nine-year streak of tournament appearances.
After being outshot 12-4 in the first half, Mount Olive (5-11-2 overall, 1-7-1 Conference Carolinas) recorded six shots in the first 10 minutes of the second half. Seidy Garcia's shot in the 55th minute hit the post and King goalkeeper Nicole Dagher made saves on a pair of shots by Ellie Barnes just 61 seconds apart.
The Trojans finally broke through at the 60:13 mark as Perry scored from 25 yards out to close the gap to 3-1.
Perry's goal gave Mount Olive hope for its second multi-goal comeback in less than two weeks. The Trojans rallied from a 2-0 halftime deficit for a 3-2 win at UNC Pembroke October 22.
But Mount Olive's thoughts of another such comeback were dashed just four minutes later after a Trojan foul set up a King free kick from just above the top right of the box. Bekah Ramstack scored from five yards out after a flurry in the box to extend King's lead to 4-1. The Tornado added another goal in the 77th minute.
King (5-10-2, 2-5-2) also scored its first two goals on set pieces, the first coming off a corner kick just over six minutes into the contest. Rayna Spears scored off of Lindsay Curtis' service from the right corner. The Tornado extended their lead to 2-0 on Shalisa Barnett's 25-yard free kick at the 15:54 mark. Rachel Thorpe added a goal just inside the 28th minute to cap the first half scoring.
Mount Olive was outshot only 18-17 for the match.
Saturday's contest marked the final career match for Trojan seniors Carlee Bock, Jordyn Koerner, Kayla Meza and Elvia Rodriguez.
