Box Score Carly White shared match-high honors with 14 kills and four blocks, and Mount Olive took the opening set, but King rallied for a 24-26, 25-18, 25-13, 25-13 victory over the Trojans in Conference Carolinas women's volleyball Saturday at Kornegay Arena. The loss snapped Mount Olive's three-match winning streak and spoiled the Trojans' Senior Day festivities.
White and fellow seniors Charnel Austin, Lauren Lee, Nicole Powell and Nicole Sparks were honored during ceremonies prior to the match.
Mount Olive (10-13 overall, 7-6 Conference Carolinas) jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the first set as Sarah Watkins scored four straight points on three kills and a block. The lead grew to as many as six points before King (22-4, 11-1) used back-to-back aces by Payton Tipton to pull within 15-14.
A pair of kills and a block by White helped the Trojans extend the lead to 21-17, but King rallied again as a second-ball kill by setter Olivia Underwood and a Trojan error tied the set 23-23. After side outs by both teams, Mount Olive claimed the opening set on White's kill in the middle and Sarah Robertson's kill on the left side.
The Trojans rallied from a three-point deficit in the second set as a kill and a block by Dezirae Mackey knotted the set at 14-14. King broke the tie as Summer Kremer's kill triggered a 4-0 run and the Tornado led the remainder of the set. Mount Olive got as close as 19-17, but King capitalized on three Trojan attack errors on the final four points to even the match at a set apiece.
King took advantage of Mount Olive attack errors in the final two sets as the Trojans compiled negative hitting percentages in both the third and fourth sets. Grace Underwood sparked the Tornado with five kills and no errors in six attempts in the third set and kills on all five of her attempts in the fourth set.
Mackey finished with eight kills and three blocks for Mount Olive, while Watkins had four blocks for the Trojans. Jordan Barnes led the Trojans in the back row with 13 digs, followed by Austin with 11.
Grace Underwood, who also had four blocks, finished with 14 kills and no errors in 16 attempts for King, while Kremer added 12 kills. Olivia Underwood tallied 39 assists and 10 digs and Tipton also had 10 digs to go with a match-high four aces.
Mount Olive had moved into a three-way tie with Barton and Limestone for third place in the conference standings after Friday's win over Lees-McRae. But Mount Olive's loss, combined with Barton's win over Lees-McRae, dropped the Trojans into fifth place, a half-game behind idle Limestone.
Mount Olive has an opportunity to move back into the top four of the standings as the Trojans play host to Limestone Tuesday in a Conference Carolinas match-up. The match is Mount Olive's final regular season home contest and concludes a five-match homestand. Match time is 7 p.m. at Kornegay Arena.
