Box Score Mount Olive allowed two goals in a span of 24 seconds barely three minutes into the contest and never recovered as the Trojans fell to conference leader Lees-McRae 3-0 in Conference Carolinas women's soccer Saturday at Amon Field. The loss was the Trojans' first this season by more than one goal in conference play.
Saturday's contest was Mount Olive's home finale. Trojan seniors Carlee Bock, Jordyn Koerner, Kayla Meza and Elvia Rodriguez were recognized during Senior Day ceremonies prior to the match.
Mount Olive (4-10-2 overall, 1-7-1 Conference Carolinas) had seemingly just completed its Senior Day festivities when Lees-McRae (10-6-0, 8-1-0) got on the scoreboard at the 2:47 mark on a goal by Sarah Mahar. Megan Thornton, who assisted on the first goal, followed with a goal of her own at 3:11 to extend the Bobcats' lead to 2-0.
Trojan goalkeeper Stephanie McCoy recorded 10 saves – five in each half – and Mount Olive's defense kept the margin at two goals for the remainder of the half. Lees-McRae added a goal by Erica Allen in the 69th minute. Kaitlyn Kerrigan assisted on the Bobcats' last two goals.
Mount Olive was outshot 23-6 by Lees-McRae. Five of the Trojans' shots were on frame as Bobcat keeper Kaitlyn Briggs recorded five saves.
Heading into the final week of the regular season, Mount Olive still has a shot at qualifying for the eight-team Conference Carolinas Tournament, which gets underway next month. The Trojans will need to win at King next Saturday and await results of other conference contests.
Mount Olive steps out of conference Monday as the Trojans travel to Murfreesboro, N.C., to take on Chowan. Match time is 3 p.m.
