Box Score Lauren Power's goal late in the first half broke a scoreless tie and goalkeepers Stephanie McCoy and Carolin Edenhofner combined on a shutout as Mount Olive picked up its first conference win of the season with a 2-0 victory over Erskine in Conference Carolinas women's soccer Saturday at Due West, S.C. Including last week's 1-1 tie at Limestone, the Trojans are unbeaten in their last two conference matches.
Mount Olive (3-9-2 overall, 1-5-1 Conference Carolinas) was held without a shot until the 29th minute and was limited to three shots in the first half. Power made the third shot count at the 43:03 mark, taking a cross from the left side from Jaclyn Thomas and scoring inside the right post to give the Trojans a 1-0 halftime lead.
A foul in the box and a yellow card early led to an insurance goal at 61:07. Christine Rocchio converted her second penalty kicks in as many attempts this season to give the Trojans a two-goal lead. Rocchio and Power each have three goals on the season, while Thomas' assist was her second.
McCoy recorded three saves in the first half for Mount Olive and Edenhofner had one save in the second half, coming with less than three minutes left in the match. Ashton Burgess finished with four saves for Erskine (1-12-0, 1-5-0). The Trojans outshot Erskine 11-7 for the match, including an 8-2 margin in the second half.
Saturday's win keeps the Trojans in contention to qualify for next month's Conference Carolinas Tournament with two conference matches remaining. The top eight teams in the regular season standings advance to the tournament.
Mount Olive steps out of conference Tuesday as the Trojans travel to Pembroke, N.C., to take on UNC Pembroke. Match time is 4 p.m.
