Women's Volleyball Digs Past Limestone In Four Sets

Box Score

Sarah Robertson matched a career high with 22 kills and was one of five Mount Olive players to reach double figures in digs as the Trojans rallied for a 22-25, 27-25, 25-23, 26-24 victory over Limestone in Conference Carolinas women's volleyball Friday at Kornegay Arena. Nicole Sparks had 20 of Mount Olive's 77 digs, the Trojans' third-highest team dig total in the last four years.

After seeing a six-point lead disappear in a first-set loss, Mount Olive (6-8 overall, 2-4 Conference Carolinas) jumped out to an 8-1 lead in the second set as Charnel Austin capped a six-point serving run with one of her match-high three aces. Limestone (2-12, 2-4) used a 12-5 run to the set and setter Jessica Onken's second-ball kill gave the Saints their first lead of the set at 20-19.

Limestone led 24-22 and was one point away from taking a two-set lead. Robertson's kill saved one set point and another ace by Austin tied the set. After the two teams traded side outs, Dezirae Mackey recorded kills on the final two points as the Trojans tied the match at a set apiece.

The third set saw Mount Olive rally from an early six-point deficit as an ace and a solo block by Mackey, along with three kills by Lauren Lee, highlighted an 8-1 run that gave the Trojans a 13-12 lead. After Lee's ace gave Mount Olive its biggest lead of the set at 20-14, Limestone used a block and a kill by Erin Courtenay to put together yet another comeback and tie the set 23-23. But a pair of Limestone attack errors clinched the third set for the Trojans.

Mount Olive built another six-point lead as Ashlee Reuter recorded a kill and combined with Morgan Morrissette on a block to give the Trojans an 18-12 advantage. Limestone responded again as Onken served a pair of aces during a 7-0 run to put the Saints on top 19-18. Limestone built a 24-22 lead and needed just one point to send the match to a fifth set. But Mackey and Carly White combined on a match-ending 4-0 run for Mount Olive.

Mackey saved a set point with a kill and White followed with a kill to forge a 24-24 tie. White, who saw limited action for much of the match, but returned to the floor late in the fourth set, had a solo block to set up match point. White finished the match with her seventh kill of the contest. Mackey served the final three points of the match.

Mount Olive led 12-6 in the first set before Limestone came back to tie the set 13-13. Trojan setter Nicole Karas' second-ball kill and two-point service run put Mount Olive back on top and the Trojans held a 22-20 lead. Limestone finished the set with five unanswered points, two coming on a kill and an ace by Courtenay, as the Saints took the opening set.

Mackey finished with nine kills for Mount Olive, while Lee added eight kills. Reuter, who had been out of action with an injury, had seven kills and three blocks in her return. Karas recorded 50 assists to go with 15 digs and four kills, two coming in the final set. Austin and Lee finished with 14 digs apiece, while Robertson added 10 digs.

Robertson recorded 62 attack attempts, the highest single-match total by a Trojan since Alicia Mote had 77 attempts against Lees-McRae. Mote, Heidi Busch and Sam Mitchell are the only Trojan players during the "rally scoring era" to record more attack attempts in a match than Robertson.

Courtenay led Limestone with 13 kills, while Regan Youngs added 10 kills. Brittany Henderson led all players with four blocks and Rebecca Kerrison had a team-high 15 digs for the Saints. Onken finished with 36 assists and 14 digs.

Friday's win snapped Mount Olive's four-match losing skid.

Mount Olive completes its weekend homestand Saturday afternoon as the Trojans play host to Lees-McRae in Conference Carolinas action. Match time is 2 p.m. at Kornegay Arena.
