Box Score Mount Olive outshot Erskine 11-1 in the second half, but was unable to find the back of the net as the Trojans fell to Erskine 1-0 in Conference Carolinas women's soccer Saturday at Amon Field. The Trojans finished the match with a 17-8 shot advantage.
After trailing at the half, Mount Olive (1-6-1 overall, 1-3-0 Conference Carolinas) nearly tied the match in the 62nd minute. Ellie Barnes eluded a series of defenders and centered the ball to Maddy Robak just above the 18. Robak's shot was heading into goal just under the crossbar, but Erskine goalkeeper Katie Lyle tipped the ball over for the save. Mount Olive was unable to convert on the ensuing corner kick.
Lyle, who finished with 10 saves for Erskine, denied the Trojans again eight minutes later on Ellie Barnes' shot from 20 yards out. She deflected the shot and Barnes' follow-up went wide of the left post.
The Trojans narrowly missed on a corner kick opportunity in the 79th minute. Robak served from the right corner, but Mary Knepp's header went just wide to the left.
Mount Olive had one final chance in the waning seconds after a series of 50-50 balls in the Erskine half. Janaya Finney's 25-yard shot attempt just before the final horn went wide of the right post.
Erskine (3-3-1, 3-0-0) gave Lyle the only goal she needed when Emily Brown played a ball to Hayley Rogers, who scored from just in front of the goal.
Mount Olive nearly tied the match before halftime when Hope Perry's service found Daisy Thomas past the Flying Fleet defense in the 42nd minute. Lyle deflected Thomas' 18-yard shot and the Trojans were unable to score on the corner kick.
Trojan goalkeeper Carolin Edenhofner finished with four saves, one of which in the 33rd minute when she deflected an open shot off the left post.
Saturday's loss marked the first time this season the Trojans have been shut out in conference play.
Mount Olive returns to action Wednesday as the Trojans play host to Queens in a Conference Carolinas match-up. Match time is 7 p.m. at Amon Field.
