Ellie Barnes' Game-Winner In Second OT Lifts Women's Soccer Past King 2-1

Box Score

t was a winning night for the Barnes family at Saturday's women's soccer match. First, Mom won a pizza at halftime. Then daughter provided cause for a pizza party. Ellie Barnes scored the game-winning goal in the 104th minute as Mount Olive outlasted King 2-1 in double overtime in Conference Carolinas women's soccer Saturday at Amon Field. The contest was the Trojans' second in as many matches to go two overtimes.

Going into the second overtime, Mount Olive (1-4-1 overall, 1-1-0 Conference Carolinas) had been outshot 18-5 after recording six of the first seven shots of the match. But Daisy Thomas forced a King save less than a minute into the second overtime and the Trojans held the Tornado without a shot.

Lauren Power played a ball over the top of the King defense from midfield and Barnes won a 50-50 to force a 1-v-1. Barnes slipped past the Tornado keeper and shot into an empty net at the 103:29 mark to give Mount Olive its first win of the season as the Trojans evened their record in conference play.

"That was the most amazing feeling in the world," said Barnes, a freshman from Fuquay-Varina, N.C. "It was a great ball from Lauren. I knew at that moment I'd get the ball in the back of the net." The goal was Barnes' second of the season.

Mount Olive broke a scoreless tie on its fourth shot attempt of the match as Maddy Robak played a long service from midfield. Thomas took a short dribble and fired from 25 yards out, just above the top right of the box. Thomas' shot went just over the outstretched arms of King's goalkeeper Abby Kitts to give the Trojans a 1-0 lead at the 17:24 mark.

The Trojans narrowly missed adding to its lead on their next shot, but were denied by Kitts. Mary Knepp's 30-yard shot on a restart was on goal, but Kitts tipped the ball just over the crossbar.

King (1-2-1, 0-1-1) had three of its five first-half shots in the final 13 minutes and kept the ball in the Mount Olive half for much of that time. Trojan defender Tia Rose prevented a potential goal late in the half, clearing a ball from just in front of the goal line after Mount Olive goalkeeper Carolin Edenhofner deflected a long restart.

The Trojans led 1-0 at the half, but King carried its late first-half momentum to a goal early in the second half. Edenhofner blocked Monica Aguirre's close-range shot, but Jamie Grigsby put home the rebound to even the match 1-1 at 49:52.

King had 10 of its 18 shots in the second half and Tornado forward Rachel Thorpe almost single-handedly broke the tie in the 86th minute. Thorpe took a service at midfield and carried the ball down the left sideline while closely marked by a Trojan defender. Thorpe dribbled to the center and her shot from the top of the box just went over the crossbar. Edenhofner made a save on another Thorpe shot a minute later.

Robak and Thomas nearly combined again in the 87th minute. Robak sent a long service into the box, but Thomas' shot rolled just wide of the right post as the two teams went into overtime.

King pressured early in overtime as Edenhofner had to make a save just 16 seconds into the extra period and Aguirre's 18-yard shot went over the crossbar. Edenhofner deflected another shot by Aguirre and Mount Olive prevented a shot attempt on the ensuing corner kick.

Mount Olive had a chance for the winner in the final minute as Janaya Finney got past the Tornado defense, but Kitts covered the ball before a shot attempt to force the second overtime.

Three days earlier, Mount Olive had to settle for a 0-0 double overtime tie at St. Andrews, a match Barnes had to sit out due to an injury. She said the Trojans were determined to keep Saturday's match from ending in a tie.

"We all wanted to win," said Barnes. "Everyone gave it all they had. We were going to find a way to win."

Edenhofner recorded 11 saves, while Kitts tallied nine saves. Mount Olive finished with 13 shots for the match, 11 on goal.

During halftime, Ellie Barnes' mother, Lorie, won a pizza from Botino's Italian Restaurant when she correctly guessed "Get Down Tonight" by K.C. and the Sunshine Band in the Name That Tune Contest.

Mount Olive returns to action Tuesday as the Trojans travel to Misenheimer, N.C., to take on Pfeiffer in a Conference Carolinas match-up. Mount Olive fell to Pfeiffer 1-0 in the quarterfinal round of last year's Conference Carolinas Tournament. Match time is 2 p.m.
