Box Score Eleven Mount Olive freshmen took to the soccer field for the first time Thursday as the Trojans women opened their 2012 campaign. Visiting UNC Pembroke scored four times, however, in the final 31 minutes, to pull away for a 5-0 decision.
The Trojans (0-1) survived an onslaught on shots by the Braves in the opening 45 minutes. Freshman goalkeeper Carolin Edenhofner and her teammates turned away one shot after another. Patrice Clarke saved a scoreless tie by deflecting a shot by UNCP's Sherrie Gessin, who appeared to have an open net in front of her. At the 34-minute mark, Edenhofner just got her fingertips on a blast by Alicia Gustafson, redirecting it off the post.
The Braves' lone marker came with just under two minutes left in the first half when Amalia Arvidsson out-dueled a Trojan defender in the box for possession of the ball, then fired it into the left corner of the net.
Mount Olive did little offensively in the opening 45 minutes, attempting just one shot on goal, a shot from Jordyn Koerner in the 39th minute.
In the second half, the shot attempts were more even, but the Braves turned their five attempts into four goals.
In the 59th minute, Rebecca Womack was rewarded with an open net after beating the goalkeeper to the ball just inside the box. Rae-Shawna Campbell followed with a pair of goals less than three minutes apart. First, she used a header on a corner kick from teammate Andrea Collen at 74:03, then scored on a penalty kick after being knocked down in the box.
Elke Groothuis closed out the scoring with help from a Fanny Forsman assist in the 81st minute.
The Trojans will try again for their first win of the season on Saturday when Mount Olive travels to Dahlonega, Ga. for a 3:30 p.m. match against North Georgia. The Trojans will spend the Labor Day weekend in Dahlonega and face West Florida on Monday at 1 p.m.
