Top-Ranked Baseball Defeats Erskine 14-5 In Conference Tournament Opener

Conference Carolinas Player of the Year Jacob Rogers belted a pair of home runs, while Pitcher of the Year Matt Dillon recorded eight strikeouts and no walks in eight innings for his ninth straight win as No. 1 seed and nationally top-ranked Mount Olive defeated No. 6 seed Erskine 14-5 in the first round of the 2012 Conference Carolinas Baseball Tournament Thursday at Wilson, N.C. Geno Escalante extended his school record hitting streak to 38 games with a run-scoring single in the sixth.

Mount Olive (39-7) will take on No. 3 seed Pfeiffer Friday at 3 p.m.

Rogers' second blast, a three-run shot to right field, capped off a seven-run fourth inning for Mount Olive. Will Bynum broke a 2-2 tie with a double earlier in the frame. Mike Mercurio and Antonio Callaway followed with RBI-singles setting the stage for Rogers.

The Trojans extended their lead to 9-2 in the sixth when Escalante singled home Rogers who led off the inning with a double. Braden Reitano added a run-scoring double in the inning as well.

Erskine trimmed the lead to 9-4 in the seventh on Logan Galliher's second homer of the season. Dillon settled down to retire the next six batters he faced before giving way to reliever Justin Weaver in the ninth.

The Trojans came back with three in the eighth when Rogers, Jermaine Berry and Nick Gaeta singled around three Erskine errors.

All 10 Trojans who made a plate appearance delivered at least one hit. Rogers finished 4-for-5 with four RBI and four runs scored. Mercurio, Callaway and Berry each had two hits.

Dillon (9-0) pitched eight innings, allowing six hits while striking out eight.
