Women's Soccer Season Ends In Overtime Loss At Limestone

Box Score

Lauren Power's corner kick late in the second half helped Mount Olive rally and force overtime, but a goal in the 94th minute was the difference as the sixth-seeded Trojans fell to No. 3 seed Limestone 2-1 in the quarterfinal round of the 2012 Conference Carolinas Women's Soccer Tournament Monday at Gaffney, S.C. The loss was the Trojans' second in overtime in a span of 48 hours.

The Trojans' season ends at 7-10-1.

Mount Olive was limited to only three shots through 77 minutes, but got on the scoreboard without benefit of an official shot attempt. Power took a corner kick and the ball went into the goal on a failed clear attempt as the Trojans evened the score 1-1 at the 77:04 mark. The goal was charged as an own goal. Power took another corner kick two minutes later, but Mount Olive was unable to convert.

Each goalkeeper came up with a save in the final minutes to send the match into overtime. Trojan keeper Carolin Edenhofner recorded a save on Gabriella Reid's header attempt in the 88th minute. Four minutes earlier, Power's shot was stopped by Saints goalkeeper Mariette Martinez.

After a foul against Mount Olive, Limestone's Leah Kennington's touch pass found Reid in front of the goal. Reid scored her second goal of the match to end the contest at the 94:25 mark and send the Saints to the semifinal round.

Mount Olive had the first shot of the overtime on Patrice Clarke's attempt in the fourth minute, but the Trojans never regained possession.

After a scoreless first half, Limestone (11-6-0) took the lead five-plus minutes into the second half. Reid dribbled to center and blasted a shot for her 10th goal of the season and a 1-0 Saints lead at 50:11.

For the match, Mount Olive was outshot 15-6. Edenhofner recorded three saves for the Trojans, while Martinez finished with two saves for the Saints.

Mount Olive posted a 3-0-1 record in its first four overtime matches this year before falling to regular season conference champion Lees-McRae 2-1 Saturday in the Trojans' regular season finale. Monday's contest marked the first time since 2006 Mount Olive has gone to overtime in the conference tournament and the first time ever in the opening round. The Trojans defeated Pfeiffer 4-3 in overtime in the semifinals of the 2005 tournament and fell to Belmont Abbey 2-1 in double overtime a year later in the semifinal round.

Monday's contest marked the career finale for six Trojan seniors: Patrice Clarke, Sarah Dodson, Janaya Finney, Jen Floyd, Mary Knepp and Tia Rose.
