Women's Soccer Falls At Lees-McRae 2-1 On OT Penalty Kick

Box Score

Goalkeeper Carolin Edenhofner withstood a 23-shot attack through regulation and nearly made a save on a penalty kick in overtime, but Mount Olive fell to regular season champion Lees-McRae 2-1 in Conference Carolinas women's soccer Saturday at Banner Elk, N.C. The loss snapped Mount Olive's five-match conference winning streak was the Trojans' first loss in five overtime matches this season. The match was the Trojans' regular season finale.

By virtue of Saturday's results, Mount Olive will be the No. 6 seed in the 2012 Conference Carolinas Women's Soccer Tournament and play its first-round match Monday at No. 3 seed Limestone.

Mount Olive (7-9-2 overall, 6-5-0 Conference Carolinas) was held without a shot until the 30th minute when Maddy Robak's attempt led to the Trojans' first corner kick of the match. Lauren Power took the corner kick and Robak headed the ball in far post to even the match at the 30:13 mark

Lees-McRae (11-5-1, 10-1-0) used the second of its five first-half corner kicks to take a 1-0 lead less than six minutes into the match. Kaitlyn Kerrigan, who forced the first two Bobcat corner kicks, recaptured her own corner kick service and scored far post.

Edenhofner recorded seven saves in regulation, including a save with 41 seconds left as Lees-McRae had four shot attempts in the final two-plus minutes. MaryBeth Sullivan's attempt as time expired was wide left as the match went into overtime.

Neither team had a shot attempt in the overtime period until Mount Olive was called for a foul in the box at the 2:11 mark. Edenhofner got a piece of Kerrigan's pk, but the ball went into the bottom corner to end the match.

The Trojans kept the match close, despite being outshot 24-3. Robak had the Mount Olive's first two shots in a span of 25 seconds and Carlee Bock helped set up a Trojan corner kick with a shot in the 87th minute.

Lees-McRae had already clinched the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament and Saturday's win gave the Bobcats sole possession of the regular season title. Lees-McRae has homefield advantage throughout the entire tournament.

The 2012 Conference Carolinas Women's Soccer Tournament gets underway with four first-round matches, each hosted by the top four seeds. Semifinals take place November 1 and the championship match is slated for November 3. Highest remaining seeds host the semifinals and championship. The conference tournament champion earns an automatic bid to the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional.

Mount Olive is 1-1 all-time against Limestone in the conference tournament. The Trojans fell to Limestone 2-0 in 2007 and defeated the Saints 4-1 in 2004 on their way to their first-ever conference championship. During the regular season this year, Mount Olive fell to Limestone 2-1.
