Box Score Mount Olive College senior Janaya Finney scored five minutes into overtime, lifting the Trojans to a 2-1 come-from-behind Conference Carolinas women's soccer win over Belmont Abbey Saturday afternoon in Belmont, N.C. With the victory, the Trojans have won four consecutive conference match and five out of six overall.
Belmont Abbey got off to a good start when Kiera Woerner scored in the 30th minute. With time running out in the match, it looked like the single marker was enough for the home team.
Then Mount Olive found the back of the net against Crusader goalkeeper Hannah Kohls. With 3:46 left in regulation, Daisy Thomas took a pass from Tia Rose and scored from the right side for her fifth goal of the season. Mount Olive is now 4-1 in matches Thomas scores.
The momentum carried over into overtime. Finney took a pass from Ellie Barnes in the 95th minute and delivered the winner.
Mount Olive keeper Carolin Edenhofner finished with six saves. The Crusaders outshot the Trojans 11-7 in the match. Belmont Abbey held an 11-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Mount Olive (6-8-1 overall, 5-4-0 CC) solidified its position for the conference tournament with the rally. The Trojans are in sixth place in the standings. The top eight teams qualify for the tournament beginning October 29. Belmont Abbey (8-8, 7-2 CC) came into the contest in a tie for first with Lees-McRae.
Lees-McRae, Belmont Abbey and Limestone are all tied with 21 points. Lees-McRae played Barton Saturday evening. Limestone has only one conference match remaining. Pfeiffer (17) and Queens (16) are still within reach for the Trojans (15).
The Trojans play host to Coker Tuesday before traveling to Lees-McRae next Saturday. Tuesday night's women match begins at 4 p.m. The men's match begins at 7 p.m.
