Box Score Mount Olive College honored its six women's soccer seniors Saturday night at Amon Field against Converse, but it was freshmen Ellie Barnes, Daisy Thomas and Carolin Edenhofner who clinched a 1-0 Conference Carolinas overtime win over the Valkyries.
Edenhofner recorded her third consecutive shutout and fourth of the season as the Trojans (5-7-1 overall, 4-4 CC) climbed back to .500 in conference play. Barnes and Thomas delivered the only goal of the match in the 97th minute. Sophomore Damilia Brooks chipped the ball into the box where Thomas was able to squeeze between two Valkyrie defenders for the last of her team's five attempts in the extra period. Her off-balance attempt was re-directed by Barnes off the Converse goalkeeper for the winner.
For Barnes, it was her fourth marker of the season, and spoiled a spirited performance from Converse keeper Alyssa Schmitt who finished was bombarded by 22 shot attempts by the Trojans. Mount Olive kept the pressure on the Valkyrie defense, limited the visitors to just six shots total at the Trojan goal. Most of the pressure on Edinhofner came in the final minutes of regulation. Converse (6-7-2, 2-4-2 CC) took five of its six shots in the after the 73rd minute.
Edinhofner got plenty of help from her defense. Senior Patrice Clarke's hustle helped break up a break-away opportunity for Joy Keith in the 76th minute, then in the 87th minute Valkyrie Darby Boyd missed a header near an unguarded post.
In overtime, Converse never challenged Mount Olive's defense. At the 92-minute mark, Thomas almost ended the match if not for a diving save from Schmitt. The Trojans outshot Converse 5-0 in the extra session.
In the first period, Mount Olive dominated the field of play everywhere except on the scoreboard. The Trojans took 12 shots, but could not find the back of the net as Schmitt saved eight before intermission. Converse's lone attempt bounced off the crossbar.
Before the contest, seniors Mary Knepp, Jen Floyd, Tia Rose, Sarah Dodson, Janaya Finney, Clarke and student assistant coach Devon Lucal and their families were honored for their dedication commitment to the Mount Olive women's soccer program.
The squad will play one more home game, Oct. 23 against Coker. Mount Olive will travel to Mars Hill, N.C. for a non-conference match Wednesday night beginning at 5 p.m. It will be the final non-conference match of the regular season.
