Late Rally, Nesmith's Near Quadruple-Double Spark Women's Basketball Past Coker 78-75

Box Score

Tamara Nesmith came within two assists and two steals of the first quadruple-double in school history and Destinee Webb's layup with 13 seconds left put Mount Olive ahead to stay as the Trojans held off Coker 78-75 in the Conference Carolinas women's basketball opener Tuesday at Kornegay Arena. Nesmith finished with 12 points and 11 rebounds to go with eight assists and eight steals, including a steal with four seconds left to help seal the win.

The Trojans (7-3 overall, 1-0 Conference Carolinas) led for much of the contest, but the Cobras (0-10, 0-1) erased an 11-point deficit and took a late lead thanks to a 51-percent shooting performance in the second half. Jessica Cohen's lay-up put the visitors ahead 72-71 with 2:39 remaining.

Mount Olive came back to tie the game twice before going ahead for good. Alyssa Luebs tied the game, 74-74, thanks to an assist by Kirksten Mitchell. After Cohen hit a free throw with 28 seconds left to put her team ahead again, Webb delivered for Mount Olive.

The Trojans cleared a path for the junior point guard, and Webb beat the Cobra defender to the rim for a 76-75 lead. The Mount Olive defense did the rest, forcing a pair of turnovers in the waning moments. Andrea Jones' steal denied one Coker challenge, then Nesmith's eighth theft of the contest put the game away.

After a slow start, Mount Olive used an 11-0 run to take a 15-8 advantage five minutes into the game. Mitchell and Nesmith combined for all 11 points in the surge. A Mitchell three-pointer with 9:50 remaining in the half extended the Trojan lead to 25-14.

The lead was still 11 after a Luebs jumper with 2:19 left in the period. Coker closed the half with an 8-2 run to close the gap to 39-34 at intermission.

Jones scored 19 of her 23 points in the second half to lead Mount Olive. Jones, who ranks second in the conference with 18.2 points per game, hit 4-of-8 three-point attempts and broke the 20-point barrier for the sixth time this season.

Mitchell added 14 points and five rebounds, while Luebs finished with 13 points. Webb dished out four assists.

Coker's Amber Lau connected on 6-of-9 three-pointers and led all scorers with 25 points to go along with five assists. Cohen added 22 points and nine rebounds.

The teams combined to shoot 53 percent from the field in the second half.

Mount Olive begins a three-game Conference Carolinas road trip as the Trojans travel to Misenheimer, N.C., to take on Pfeiffer. Tip-off is 5:30 p.m.
