Box Score Andrea Jones scored 19 points - her fifth consecutive game of at least 19 points - but a second-half spurt was the difference as Mount Olive had its three-game winning streak snapped with a 66-53 loss to Elizabeth City State in non-conference women's basketball Saturday at Elizabeth City, N.C. Jasmine McDonald recorded her third double-double in five games with 12 points and 12 rebounds.
After trailing by a field goal at halftime, Mount Olive (3-2) tied the game 32-32 on Alyssa Luebs' layup with 18:36 left in the contest. Elizabeth City State (4-3) then took the lead for good as Jasmine Whitehurst hit three three-pointers during a 13-3 run to give the Vikings a 45-35 lead with 12:02 remaining.
The Trojans got as close as six points after Jones' three-pointer with 5:52 left cut the margin to 55-49. But Mount Olive was limited to two field goals the rest of the way and was held scoreless over the final 3:54 of the game.
Joneiqua Gary's layup with 14:46 left in the first half gave the Trojans a 9-8 lead, but Jasmine Walker answered with a three-pointer for Elizabeth City State and Mount Olive never led again. Jones' three-pointer tied the game 20-20 after ECSU built a five-point lead, but the Vikings went ahead for the remainder of the half on Whitehurst's steal and subsequent three-point play with exactly five minutes before halftime.
The margin grew to as many as four before another three-pointer by Jones helped pull the Trojans within 32-30 at the break.
In her first five games this season, Jones has scored 19 points twice and 20 points twice. She also has a season-best 21-point performance. Jones connected on four three-pointers Saturday.
Tamara Nesmith narrowly missed her second double-double of the season with nine points and nine rebounds. Mount Olive outrebounded the Vikings 33-31.
Whitehurst scored a game-high 23 points for Elizabeth City State on 9-for-13 shooting, including 4-for-6 from three-point range. Stephanie Harper added 18 points and nine rebounds for ECSU.
Mount Olive is off until December 12 when the Trojans play host to Saint Augustine's in non-conference action. Tip-off is 5 p.m. at Kornegay Arena.
