Carly White had a match-high 21 kills and Erika Conner added 20 kills as Mount Olive rallied from a two-set deficit for a 17-25, 21-25, 25-20, 25-21, 15-11 victory over Limestone in Conference Carolinas women's volleyball Saturday at Gaffney, S.C. The win is the Trojans' sixth in a row and seventh in their last eight contests. Mount Olive was limited to a .100 hitting percentage in the first two sets, but recorded a .390 hitting percentage in the last three sets, including 10 kills and no errors in 17 attempts in the fifth set.
After dropping the first two sets, Mount Olive (11-10 overall, 6-6 Conference Carolinas) used a 10-2 run in the third set to turn a three-point deficit into a 16-11 lead. Nicole Sparks' ace broke a 10-10 and put the Trojans ahead to stay. Limestone (12-11, 9-5) got as close as 19-18, but Conner recorded kills on the final two points of the set to get Mount Olive in the win column.
The Trojans overcame a four-point deficit in the fourth set, which saw 11 ties and four lead changes. The set was tied 20-20 when a Limestone error, followed by a block by White and a kill by Trojan setter Charnel Austin highlighted a four-point run. After a Limestone side out, Conner's kill on the second set point evened the match at two sets apiece.
Mount Olive spotted Limestone the first point in the fifth set, then outscored the Saints 7-1 and never looked back. White had two blocks and a kill during the run, while Austin recorded an ace. Limestone got as close as two points behind back-to-back aces by Holli Dawson. But kills by White, Sarah Robertson and Dezirae Mackey helped stop the Saints' rally. White recorded a kill on match point to seal the win.
White and Conner reached the 20-kill mark in the same contest for the second time in the Trojans' last four matches. Conner has recorded a career-high 20 kills three times in her last eight matches.
Mackey finished with nine kills and three blocks for Mount Olive, while Austin added 49 assists and two service aces. Sparks had two aces to go with 10 digs, while Lauren Lee led all players with 14 digs. White had a match-high five blocks.
Brittany Henderson led Limestone with 10 kills, while Jordan Preville had a match-high six aces, four coming in the first two sets.
Mount Olive returns to action Tuesday as the Trojans play host to Pfeiffer in a Conference Carolinas match-up. Match time is 7 p.m. at Kornegay Arena.
