Mount Olive Drops Conference Carolinas Opener to UNC Pembroke

MOUNT OLIVE — The University of Mount Olive women's volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision to UNC Pembroke on Wednesday evening at Kornegay Arena in its Conference Carolinas opener.

The Trojans opened the match strong, claiming the first set 25-21. UNC Pembroke answered with a narrow 25-23 win in the second set before taking control in the final two frames, winning 25-11 and 25-13 to secure the match.

Kaitlyn Koel led Mount Olive offensively with 10 kills, while Kaitlyn Landis added nine kills and Olivia Melvin finished with seven. Rachel Clark recorded five kills while hitting .308 for the match.

Lyndsay Reid paced the Trojan offense with 27 assists, while Kacey Gore contributed 14 digs. Landis added eight digs, while Reid finished with 16 digs for a double-double.

At the net, Clark recorded a team-high three blocks, while Melvin and Koel each added three block assists. Mount Olive finished the match with 40 kills and a .088 hitting percentage.

With the loss, Mount Olive falls to 4-5 overall and 0-1 in Conference Carolinas, while UNC Pembroke improves to 4-4 overall and 1-0 in league play.

The Trojans return to action against Erskine on Friday, Sept. 11 at 6 p.m. in Due West, S.C.
