Trojans Take Down Shaw 6-1 in Strong Home Performance

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. – The University of Mount Olive women's tennis team turned in a strong performance on Saturday afternoon, defeating Shaw University, 6-1, at the John Neal Walker Tennis Center.

The Trojans (5-9) claimed the doubles point by winning two of three matches. Nina Bernier and Simone Szovan led the way at No. 1 doubles with a 6-4 victory, while Julie Jagiella and Courtney Howell secured a win by default at the No. 3 position.

Mount Olive carried that momentum into singles play, winning five of six matches to seal the victory. Szovan dominated at No. 1 singles with a commanding 6-0, 6-1 win, and Bernier followed with a hard-fought straight-set victory at No. 3, 6-1, 7-6 (7-4). Jagiella added another point with a 6-0, 6-2 decision at No. 4 singles.

Alina Esser earned a solid 6-4, 7-5 win at No. 5 singles, while Howell picked up a win by default at the No. 6 position to round out the scoring for the Trojans.

Mount Olive will look to carry the momentum into conference play as the Trojans hit the road to face Chowan on Tuesday at 2 p.m.
