MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. (April 4) – The University of Mount Olive women's lacrosse team loses 12-11 to the Mountain Lions of Young Harris is Saturday afternoon action.
With the loss, Mount Olive falls to 8-4 over all this season and have now lost their perfect conference record dropping 6-1.
Senior
Katie Broom shows out on her senior day recording four goals and one assist, snagging two ground balls, winning three draw controls, and causing two turnovers. Redshirt freshman Karysn Elliott captured four points with two goals and two assists while freshman teammate
Jordan Bolam claimed two goals, two ground balls, and caused one turnover. Seniors
Alexa Fitzgerald and
Maddy Fratus both recorded one goal along with freshman
Libby Berg.
On defense, senior
Giavahna Gasdia recorded four draw controls with three caused turnovers and four ground balls. Junior
Simone McCraw hit a milestone person record with 100 caused turnovers in her college lacrosse career in todays game. McCraw also capture six ground balls with two caused turnover so finish her day on the field.
In the first quarter, Fitzgerald scored the first goal of the game at the 13:20 mark to take the 1-0 lead Elliott following with the second goal of the game just a minute and a half after the first one. Young Harris was able to sneak a goal in but not Bolam answered less than a minute later to bring the score to 3-1. Before the end of the first quarter the Trojans gained a three-goal lead of 5-2. The Mountain Lions answered with heat in the second quarter scoring five goals while the UMO was only able to score one leaving the first half at 6-7 in favor of YHC.
The third quarter started slow with no one scoring until the 5:47 mark where both team fought to the Trojans being able to take the lead before the end of the quarter. Four unanswered goals by made by the Mountain lions left UMO down 12-10 Broom sneaking one last goal in, in the last 21 seconds of the game to bring the final score to 12-11.
Junior goalkeeper
Ruby Burandt totaled 10 saves on 22 shots faced in her 60 minutes of action stealing four ground balls.
The Trojans will continue to play on Wednesday, April 8, against Wingate in non-conference play at 5 p.m. away in Wingate, N.C.
