MOUNT OLIVE — The Mount Olive softball team closed out its home doubleheader in dominant fashion Monday, sweeping Millersville behind a powerful offensive showing in game one and a complete-game effort in the circle in game two.
The Trojans exploded offensively in the opener, defeating the Marauders 10–1 in five innings. After a quiet first inning, Mount Olive broke through in the second when Emma King reached on a single and eventually scored on a throwing error following
Madelyn Sutton's infield hit to give the Trojans an early lead.
Mount Olive blew the game open in the third inning, plating six runs on six hits. Liz Thome started the rally with an RBI single before King added another run-scoring hit.
Cadence Lane and
Emily Saw each drove in runs, while Sutton capped the inning with an RBI single as the Trojans surged ahead 7–0.
Millersville managed its lone run in the fourth on a solo home run, but Mount Olive quickly responded in the bottom half of the inning. Samantha Taylor led off with a double and came around to score as the Trojans added three more runs, highlighted by RBI singles from Thome and Lane to stretch the advantage to 10–1.
In the circle, Hailey King delivered a strong outing for Mount Olive, allowing just one hit and one run while striking out four across five innings to earn the win. The Trojans finished with 12 hits in the game, led by multi-hit performances from Taylor, Thome, King and Sutton.
Mount Olive carried that momentum into the second game, jumping on Millersville early in a 6–4 victory.
The Trojans struck quickly in the first inning when Taylor and McKenzie Millard reached base ahead of a two-run double from Thome. King followed with a sacrifice fly to score another run and give Mount Olive a 3–0 lead.
The Trojans added another run in the second when Taylor delivered an RBI double to push the lead to 4–0. Mount Olive created additional separation in the fifth inning as Lane singled and eventually scored on an RBI hit from Hadley Womack, while Taylor later drove in another run on a fielder's choice to make it 6–0.
Millersville mounted a late push with a three-run home run in the sixth and added another run in the seventh, but Mount Olive held on down the stretch.
Emma Myatt went the distance for the Trojans, allowing four runs on eight hits while striking out one to secure the complete-game victory.
Offensively, Mount Olive tallied 10 hits in the nightcap. Taylor led the way with two hits and two RBIs, while Millard and Lane also recorded multi-hit performances.
With the sweep, the Trojans build momentum heading into their next matchup as they welcome Catawba for another home doubleheader tomorrow at 1 and 3 p.m.
