Split Tri-Match with Gritty Win Over Mount St. Mary’s

MOUNT OLIVE -The University of Mount Olive flag football team split results in a Thursday night tri-match at home, battling to a hard-fought 13-7 victory over Mount St. Mary's before falling to Emmanuel Lions, 70-0.

Mount Olive showed resilience and defensive grit in the opening contest, rallying from an early deficit to secure the win. After a scoreless first quarter, Mount St. Mary's struck first in the second, taking a 7-0 lead following a short rushing touchdown and conversion. The Trojans responded in the second half, sparked by a 21-yard touchdown run from Saundra Funderburk in the third quarter to cut the deficit to one.

The Trojans' defense tightened from there, forcing multiple negative plays and limiting Mount St. Mary's offensive momentum. Early in the fourth quarter, Mount Olive capitalized on a key drive, finishing with the go-ahead touchdown and a successful conversion pass from Jaylianie Lucas to take a 13-7 lead. The defense held firm the rest of the way to seal the victory.

Mount Olive totaled 196 yards of offense in the win, including 106 rushing yards, led by Funderburk (39 yards, TD) and Lucas (55 yards, TD). Defensively, the Trojans recorded five sacks and consistently pressured the Mount St. Mary's backfield.

In the nightcap, Mount Olive faced a high-powered Emmanuel squad that controlled the game from the opening drive. Emmanuel scored early and often, building a 33-0 halftime lead behind an efficient passing attack led by Lillian Stephenson.

The Trojans continued to compete, but struggled to find offensive rhythm against Emmanuel's defense, finishing with 174 total yards. Maiya George led Mount Olive on the ground with 42 yards, while Zamarah Rawls and George combined for key receptions in the passing game.

Despite the result, Mount Olive's defense was active throughout, with Alivia Conticello leading the team with eight tackles, while multiple Trojans contributed across the field.

The Trojans hit the road for their next contest against Hollins on Wednesday, April 1, opening the month with a doubleheader. Game one is set to begin at 3:30 p.m., followed by the second game at 5:30 p.m.
