Trojans Dominate Chowan in 42-13 Home Victory

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C.The University of Mount Olive women's flag football team delivered a dominant all-around performance, defeating Chowan, 42-13, on Tuesday evening.

After surrendering an early touchdown in the opening quarter, the Trojans quickly responded and took control of the game behind a high-powered offense and a disruptive defense that forced multiple turnovers.

Mount Olive broke the game open in the second quarter, erupting for 28 points to take a commanding 28-6 lead into halftime. The Trojans continued to build momentum in the second half, adding two more scores to extend the advantage to 42-6 before Chowan added a late touchdown.


Offensively, quarterback Jaylianie Lucas led the way, completing 17-of-24 passes for 161 yards and two touchdowns while adding 63 rushing yards and two scores on the ground. Saundra Funderburk proved to be a key playmaker, totaling 158 all-purpose yards, including 90 receiving yards and a touchdown along with 68 rushing yards.

Alivia Conticello also made an impact with both a rushing and receiving touchdown, while the Trojans' ground game totaled 140 rushing yards as a team.

Defensively, Mount Olive was outstanding, recording four interceptions and holding Chowan to just 27 rushing yards. Breanna Barbee highlighted the defensive effort with two interceptions, including a pick-six, while Riley Stanton and Conticello also recorded interceptions. The Trojans added two sacks and consistently pressured the Chowan offense throughout the contest.


Mount Olive finished with 306 total yards of offense compared to 213 for Chowan, controlling the game on both sides of the ball.


The Trojans will look to carry the momentum into their next contest as they continue conference play with matches on Thursday against Mount St. Mary's at 3 p.m. and Emmanuel (Ga.) at 5 p.m., both at home.
