HILTON HEAD, S.C. — The University of Mount Olive women's tennis team rallied with a strong showing in singles play to defeat the Fairmont State Falcons 4-2 Thursday afternoon during spring break competition in Hilton Head, South Carolina.

The Trojans overcame an early deficit after Fairmont State swept the doubles matches to secure the doubles point.

At No. 1 doubles, Hope Backx and Lara Smith edged Simone Szovan and Nina Bernier in a tight contest, 7-6. Fairmont State also claimed the No. 2 doubles match as Maria Fonseca and Stephanie Gopar defeated Alina Esser and Victoria Calle, 6-2. At No. 3 doubles, Alara Akgul and Jada Mae Okoye topped Julie Jagiella and Courtney Howell, 6-2.

Mount Olive responded in singles play, winning four of the five completed matches to secure the team victory.

At No. 1 singles, Szovan led the charge with a straight-set victory over Fonseca, 7-5, 6-0. Calle followed with a comeback win at No. 2 singles, defeating Backx, 1-6, 6-4, 1-0. Bernier added another point for the Trojans at No. 3 singles with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Lara Smith.

Jagiella secured the match-clinching point at No. 4 singles, battling past Gopar in three sets, 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (10-3). Fairmont State's lone singles victory came at No. 5, where Laura Maciel defeated Esser, 6-4, 6-2.

Mount Olive continues its spring break slate in Hilton Head as the Trojans prepare to face the West Virginia State Yellow Jackets on Friday at 8:30 a.m.
