MOUNT OLIVE — The Mount Olive women's tennis team dropped a 5–2 decision to Barton on Monday afternoon at the John Neal Walker Tennis Center.
Mount Olive started strong in doubles play, earning victories on two courts. At No. 1 doubles, Nina Bernier and
Simone Szovan secured a 6–4 win over Barton's Irma Granstam and Aarni Yellu. The Trojans also claimed a convincing 6–2 victory at No. 2 doubles as
Victoria Calle and
Alina Esser defeated Alexandra Saez Lozano and Leonie Hellum-Lilleengen. Barton picked up the final doubles match with a 6–0 win at No. 3, but Mount Olive carried momentum into singles play.
Szovan delivered Mount Olive's first singles point with a strong performance at No. 1, defeating Granstam 6–4, 6–2.
Barton, however, responded by claiming the remaining singles matches to secure the overall victory. Saez Lozano defeated
Calle 6–4, 6–1 at No. 2 singles, while Yellu battled past Bernier in three sets at No. 3, 6–1, 3–6, 6–2. Hellum-Lilleengen added another point with a 6–4, 6–4 win over Julie Jagiella at No. 4.
The Bulldogs sealed the match with straight-set victories on the final two courts, as Alejandra Carmona Garcia defeated Esser
6–1, 6–0 at No. 5 and Claudia Zaratiegui Martinez topped
Courtney Howell 6–0, 6–2 at No. 6.
The Trojans next competition sees them travel to Hilton Head, S.C. to take on Fairmont State on Thursday as they continue into spring break.
