MOUNT OLIVE – The UMO baseball program used a six-run third inning and a strong start on the mound to secure a 10-4 victory over Catawba in non-conference action at Scarborough Field.
After a scoreless first inning on both sides, Mount Olive opened the scoring in the bottom of the second.
Lane McLean drew a lead-off walk, and junior
Jakhari Howard followed with another free pass. Junior
Josh Mason delivered an RBI single up the middle to plate McLean and give the Trojans a 1-0 advantage.
The Trojans broke the game open in the bottom of the third, sending 10 batters to the plate and scoring six runs on four hits.
Kayden Crawford worked a lead-off walk before
Rowan Watt doubled to place two runners in scoring position. Redshirt junior
Garrett Moffett launched a three-run home run to right field to extend the lead to 4-0. Later in the inning, Mason doubled to left center and
Dawson Ables and
Mac James each drove in runs, while Crawford capped the frame with an RBI groundout to push the margin to 7-0.
Mount Olive added a solo home run in the fourth off the bat of Howard to stretch the lead to 8-0. Catawba responded with a run in the fifth on an RBI single, but Honse limited the damage and exited after six strong innings with the Trojans leading 8-1.
In the bottom of the fifth,
Ryder Hancock doubled to right-center before Ables delivered an RBI single to make it 9-1. The Trojans added another insurance run in the sixth as Mason singled to center field to score Moffett and increase the advantage to 10-1.
Catawba mounted a late rally in the eighth, capitalizing on an error before a two-run home run trimmed the deficit to 10-4. The bullpen shut the door from there, as Hopkins struck out two batters in the ninth to secure the victory.
Pete Honse earned the win (1-0) after allowing one run on six hits with four strikeouts and no walks across 6.0 innings.
John Nelson McLamb provided 1.1 innings of relief with two strikeouts, while
Kole Hopkins closed the contest with 1.2 shutout innings, striking out three and allowing no hits.
Mount Olive returns to action at Scarborough Field as the Trojans continue their home stand against Chowan on Friday.
