Mount Olive - The University of Mount Olive men's lacrosse team dropped a 15–9 road decision to Newberry on Saturday at Setzler Field, moving to 0-2 on the season.
Mount Olive struck early, jumping out to a 3–1 lead in the first quarter behind goals from
Benjamin Vanderkley,
Brayden Rieger, and
David Androes. Newberry scored six straight to take a 6-3 lead over the Trojans, but UMO responded with two quick goals in the last minute of the 1
st quarter from Vanderkley (0:49) and
Mikey Stavrianakis (0:21) to cut the lead to two, 7-5.
Vanderkley led the offense with a hat trick on seven shots, including a man-up goal, while Rieger added two goals and five ground balls.
Tyler Michael,
Joshua Dewart, and Androes each found the net, and
Trent Steele and
Jason Falso dished out two assists apiece.
In goal,
Kurtis Lensing played all 60 minutes, making 18 saves against 55 shots. The Trojans finished with 32 shots (25 on goal), 25 ground balls, and went 2-for-6 on extra-man opportunities.
