Trojans Upset Shorter in 66–61 Road Win

ROME, Ga. — The University of Mount Olive women's basketball team picked up a hard-fought road win on Saturday, edging Shorter 66–61 at the Winthrop-King Centre, handing the Conference Carolinas Southwest Division leader their 10th loss of the season.

Kayla Jackson led all scorers with 23 points, connecting on five three-pointers, while Jayla Hicks added 18 points, eight assists, and two steals in a complete all-around performance. Savannah McAfee chipped in 14 points and hit all five of her free-throw attempts, including key makes in the final seconds, as Jerin Truesdale contributed seven points and six rebounds.

After trailing 13–11 at the end of the first quarter, Mount Olive responded with an 18-point second quarter to take a 29–27 halftime lead. The Trojans maintained their composure in a back-and-forth second half that featured 17 lead changes, matching Shorter point-for-point before taking control late.


In the fourth quarter, Mount Olive shot 100 percent from the free-throw line (6-for-6) and forced timely turnovers down the stretch. Hicks and Jackson combined for the decisive scoring run, while the Trojan defense limited Shorter to just 14 points in the final period


The Trojans shot an efficient 48.9 percent from the field and knocked down 13-of-15 free throws to close out the contest..


The win improves Mount Olive to 7–15 overall and 4–12 in conference play as the Trojans continue to build momentum heading into the final stretch of the season.
