Trojans Open Season With Road Loss at UNC Wilmington

WILMINGTON  – The University of Mount Olive men's basketball team opened the 2026-27 season Monday evening, facing NCAA Division I opponent UNC Wilmington on the road at Trask Coliseum. The Trojans battled through the first half but ultimately fell 101-65.

Mount Olive faced an early deficit as the Seahawks built a 17-4 advantage in the opening minutes. The Trojans responded with a 6-0 scoring run, highlighted by a three-pointer from Chaise Smith and another from Jayden Daisy, to cut the margin to seven. Mount Olive continued to work its way back into the game, with Christian Ananaba knocking down a three-pointer and Chase Williams adding a basket to pull the Trojans within six at 26-20.

Ananaba helped pace the Mount Olive offense in the opening half, while Smith and Williams provided additional scoring. The Trojans carried that momentum into the final minutes, trimming the deficit to seven before heading into the locker room trailing 36-27.

Mount Olive opened the second half looking to continue its push, but UNC Wilmington extended its advantage with an early scoring run. The Trojans continued to compete and found contributions throughout the lineup, with all 16 players seeing action and 12 getting into the scoring column. However, the Seahawks maintained control as the game progressed.

Ananaba led the Trojans with 15 points and five rebounds on 5-of-10 shooting. Smith finished with 13 points, while Williams and Jullien Cole each added seven points. Cole connected on both of his three-point attempts. Matt Kirby contributed six rebounds and five assists, and DJ Holloway recorded four points, four rebounds and an assist.

Mount Olive received 41 points from its bench, with contributions from across the roster. The Trojans finished the night shooting 33.9 percent from the field, including 27.3 percent from three-point range, and converted 19 of 26 attempts at the free-throw line.

The contest marked the fourth consecutive season UNC Wilmington hosted Mount Olive to open the regular season. The Trojans look to build on Monday's season-opening experience as they continue the 2026-27 campaign in their home opener against Shaw on Monday in Kornegay Arena at 7 p.m.
