Trojans Dominate Doubles Play; Nishkata and Gruenefeldt Earn Singles Play Finalist Victories

FAYETTEVILLE -  The University of Mount Olive men's tennis won every doubles flight on day two of the Methodist Invitational on Saturday.

Saturday also featured all eight flight singles play finals matches. The Trojans had three players in the men's open singles finals: Hiroma Nishikata, Niklas Gruenefeldt, and Rasmus Grindheim.

Nishikata defeated Aliaksandr Rudy (Averett) 7-5, 6-1 in the flight four men's open singles final and Gruenefeldt dominated Caio Lira (Methodist) 6-2, 6-2 in the flight six men's open singles final.

Grindheim fell to Nicola Bottelberghs (Barton) 7-5, 6-2 in the flight two finals.

Flight one doubles had both the Grindheim/Philip Peter Carstensen and the Bram Poel/Luke Oosthuizen doubles pairs reach the finals.

Grindheim/Carstensen defeated Boden Willis/Jack Joshua (Belmont Abbey) 6-2 and Matthew Hurley/Kofi Bowe (Methodist) 6-4 to reach the finals.

Poel/Oosthuizen in a close battle against Florian Bert/Samuel Egui (Averett) narrowly escaped with the 7-6 (7-5) win. In the semifinals, Poel/Oosthuizen defeated Aditya Chauhan and Hampus Wik (Barton), 7-5.

In a battle of the Trojans to win the flight one doubles finals, Grindheim/Carstensen came out on top with a 6-2 victory over Poel/Oosthuizen.

Flight two doubles consisted of a Joao Matias Sonaglia/Kristoffer Dalbak pairing for the Trojans. Sonaglia/Dalbak defeated Decklan Rayner/Aaron Zoubek (Methodist) 7-5 and Lucas Fiandra/Rafael Jodas (Averett), 6-1, to reach the finals.

In the finals, they faced Satwik Kollepalli/Aliaksandr Rudy of Averett, winning 6-4.

Jacob Womble and Gruenefeldt were doubles partners in flight three doubles play, winning the final behind two wins and an injury. Against Alex Donnelly/Roger Pamies of Averett, they won 6-3, before defeating Lennart Baumann/William Wallis (Belmont Abbey) 6-2 to reach the finals.

In the finals match, Womble/Gruenefeldt won by default due to injury to become finalists.

The Trojans next competition is at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Tournament from Sept. 25-29 in Sumter, SC.
