Women's Tennis falls in regular season finale at LMC

BANNER ELK, N.C. (April 18) – In the Conference Carolinas regular season finale, the University of Mount Olive women's tennis team was dealt a 7-0 loss at No. 47 ranked Lees-McRae while competing at the C.D. Chesley Tennis Courts on Friday afternoon.

With the loss, the Trojans finish the regular season with an 8-8 overall record while going 7-3 in league play. Mount Olive clinched the No. 4 overall seed in the league tournament next week and will compete against No. 9 seed Chowan in the opening round. Meanwhile, the Bobcats improve to 16-4 this season behind a perfect 10-0 mark in conference action.

In the doubles session, Lees-McRae delivered a sweep after taking all three matches to earn the initial point of the contest. Freshman Nina Bernier and sophomore Simone Szovan battled in a 5-7 loss to Pati Sanchez and Anita Ivanova in the first slot, while sophomores Lara Stamereilers and Victoria Calle dropped a 5-7 decision in the second doubles against Miranda Noor and Alexa Mazzei Lopez. In the third position, junior Alina Esser and senior Sandra Riecken suffered a 1-6 loss versus Caroline Brothers and Lina Saqout.

Lees-McRae sealed the shutout win on Friday after winning all six singles matches. Stamereilers fell 6-7 (3-7), 6-7 (4-7) in a hard-fought loss to Sanchez in the first singles before Svozan lost in straight sets 3-6, 6-7 (3-7) against Noor in the second position. Calle was dealt a 6-7 (5-7), 2-6 loss versus Saquot in the third slot, while Bernier suffered a 4-6, 2-6 loss to Ivanova in the fourth singles. Freshman Julie Jagiella competed in the fifth position and fell 1-6, 2-6 against Lopez before fellow freshman Claudia Cerdan dropped a 0-6, 0-6 decision versus Brothers in the sixth slot.

The Trojans will enter the Conference Carolinas Championship as the No. 4 seed and face No. 9 Chowan in the first round on Thursday, April 24, at the Palmetto Tennis Center in Sumter, South Carolina.
