MOUNT OLIVE (March 15) – The University of Mount Olive men's tennis team registered a 7-0 win over Shorter in Conference Carolinas play on Saturday at the John Neal Walker Tennis Center. The two tennis programs met for the first time after Shorter joined Conference Carolinas from the Gulf South Conference this year.
With the win, the Trojans extended their winning streak to two in a row and improve to 4-6 overall, behind a 2-0 record in conference action. Meanwhile, Shorter drops to 0-4 this season with a 0-2 mark in conference play, after losing to Francis Marion on March 14.
UMO secured the doubles point after winning all three matches on Saturday. Junior
Philip Peter Carstensen and sophomore
Kristoffer Dalbak posted an easy 6-1 win in 23 minutes over David Arrieta Gomez and Agustin Yap in the first position. In the second doubles, juniors
Niklas Gruenefeldt and
Bram Poel won by a score of 6-0 against Federico Roman and Mario Molina-Mari. The freshman duo
Joao Matias Sonaglia and
Luke Oosthuizen delivered a fast 6-0 victory in 24 minutes against Sebastian Gamez and Carlos Tubio in the third slot.
In the singles portion, the Trojans tallied all of the possible six victories to claim a 7-0 win. In the first slot, Dalbak claimed an quick 6-0, 6-2 decision over Arrieta Gomez, before Gruenefeldt won in straight sets by a score of 6-1, 6-2 over Gamez in the second singles. In the third position, Poel swept over Roman 6-1, 6-2 before Carstensen rallied to the fast 6-2, 6-1 victory in just over an hour versus Tubio in the fourth slot. Sophomore
Hampus Hagglund claimed a 6-3, 6-0 win over Yap in the fifth singles, while freshman Hirmona Nishikata won 6-3, 6-1 against Molina-Mari in the sixth position.
Mount Olive will return to action on Thursday, March 20, for a non-conference match against Catawba.
