MOUNT OLIVE (Feb. 8) – In a Southeast Regional matchup on Saturday afternoon, the University of Mount Olive women's tennis program suffered a 7-0 loss against Lander in non-conference play at John Neal Walker Tennis Center.
With the loss, the Trojans drop to 0-2 in the early spring season and will return to their home court on Thursday, Feb. 13, to face North Carolina Central. It marked the fifth all-time matchup between the sides dating back to 2016 with Lander holding a 4-1 edge in the series. Meanwhile, the Bearcats improve 2-1 overall after defeating a pair of Conference Carolinas opponents this week.
Lander swept the doubles portion after capturing all three matches over the Trojans. Freshman

Simone Szovan were dealt a 4-6 loss by Mille Elsborg and Maria Jose Zarza in the first position. In the second doubles, sophomore

Claudia Cerdan dropped a 6-7 (5-7) battle against Evelyn Altmaier and Bailee Martin. Freshman
Julie Jagiella and junior
Alina Esser competed in the third slot and fell by a 0-6 margin to Ella Sowman and Ashtyn Cason.
The Bearcats secured the 7-0 win after collecting all six singles matches. In the first singles, Cerdan suffered a 5-7, 4-6 loss to Elsborg before Szovan dropped a 3-6, 2-6 decision to Altmaier in the second position. In the third slot, Calle fell by a final score of 0-6, 1-6 to Zarza while Bernier was dealt a 2-6, 1-6 loss versus Sowman. Esser suffered a 4-6, 1-6 defeat in the fifth singles before Jagiella dropped a 0-6, 4-6 loss to Martin in the sixth position.
Mount Olive will compete on Thursday, Feb. 13, at the John Neal Walker Tennis Center versus North Carolina Central at 3 p.m.
