MOUNT OLIVE (Feb. 6) – Hosting their first Senior Night in program history, the Trojans finished the regular season with a dominant 39-10 victory over Newberry in South Atlantic Conference Carolinas action at Kornegay Arena on Thursday night.
With the win, the University of Mount Olive women's wrestling program improves to 9-7 overall behind a 5-2 record in league duals. The Trojans set a new program record for single-season victories and secure third place in the conference standings. Meanwhile, Newberry drops to 2-4 overall with a 0-3 mark in league duals.
The Trojans collected back-to-back forfeits to begin the contest before freshman
O'marzria Wright secured a first-round pin over Celeste Welch in the 117-weight class, 15-0. Sophomore
Ayonna McNeill followed up with a quick 10-0 tech fall against Summer McKeen at 124 before senior
Chloe Lawler won via injury default in the 131-weight class. Sophomore
Angelica Steffy (131) stretched the lead to 29-0 following a victory by fall versus Amanda Moore. Newberry captured its first points with a pin at 145 before handing two more forfeits to the Trojans. In the final bout, the Wolves claimed a first-round win via fall, but the Trojans recorded the 39-10 victory.
The Trojans will be idle for two-plus weeks to prepare for the NCWWC Region II Championships, which is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 22, in Franklin Springs, Georgia.
