Kirby’s Heroics Not Enough as Mount Olive Falls 94-90 in the 60th Annual Pickle Classic Finale

MOUNT OLIVE – Matt Kirby's spectacular second half wasn't enough as the University of Mount Olive Trojans fell 94-90 to Emory & Henry in the final game of the 60th Annual Pickle Classic Saturday night.

Kirby erupted for 19 second-half points after scoring just seven in the first, sparking a 10-0 Trojan run with five of those points, including a remarkable layup off the backboard over a defender. His free throw cut the Wasp lead to 78-74 with 4:53 remaining.

At 3:44, down six, Kirby grabbed a defensive rebound and drove for a layup to bring Mount Olive within four points. Despite back-to-back layups by E&H, Kirby sank a clutch three-pointer at 1:10 to trim the deficit to five. He then scored on a fast-break layup and converted the and-one free throw, closing the gap to 87-82.

Freshman Oliver Roberts kept the Trojans in striking distance, hitting three free throws to make it 89-85 with just over 30 seconds left. Raul Perez added two more free throws, and Kirby scored again on a drive to pull Mount Olive within three at 92-89.

E&H hit their final free throws, and despite Perez making one of three at the line in the closing seconds, the Trojans fell 94-90.

Kirby led Mount Olive with 26 points, shooting 11-of-12 from the line and 7-of-14 from the field, adding five rebounds and three assists. Perez recorded an 18-point, 11-rebound double-double, while Jefferson McLamb (11) and Christopher Brown (12) also scored in double figures. Brown contributed nine rebounds and two steals.

Mount Olive opens conference play against Francis Marion in Florence, S.C., on Tuesday, Nov. 25.
