Stamereilers reaches round of 32; UMO concludes play at ITA

SUMTER, S.C. (Sept. 29) – Sophomore Lara Stamereilers made an appearance in the round of 32, as the Trojans competed in the 2024 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Southeast Regional Championships in Sumter, South Carolina, at the Palmetto Tennis Center over the weekend.

The University of Mount Olive women's tennis program featured a pair of doubles teams in the field of 48, while three individuals competed in singles play with nearly 100 players in the tournament.

In singles competition, Stamereilers earned the No. 9 seed and posted a 1-1 record in her second appearance at the regional event. She received an opening-round bye before producing a 7-6, 6-1 victory over Andrea Gonzalez of Augusta. In the round of 32, Stamereilers faced No. 9 Jada Young of Georgia College and suffered a 6-4, 6-3 loss.

Fellow sophomore Valeria Guerrero finished with a 2-2 record in the single play while competing in South Carolina. She registered a 6-2, 6-0 win over Fatima Hernandez Huerta of Francis Marion in the first round before dropping a 6-1, 6-3 decision to No. 9 Eryka Kruk of Flagler. Guerrero played in a pair of matches in the consolation bracket and earned a 4-1 victory via injury over Alexa Gamborino of Newberry before dropping out of the event due to injury while facing Simone Mercier of Young Harris.

Sophomore Simone Szovan collected an opening-round win over Riley Gunter of North Greenville by a 6-0, 6-2 margin, but fell by a score of 6-1, 6-1 to No. 2 seed Angelina Linnikova of Augusta. She competed in a single consolation match and suffered a 6-3, 7-5 loss to Lina Sarhan of Newberry.

In the doubles play, sophomore Victoria Calle and Guerrero posted an opening-round victory by a score of 8-4 over Nika Dundovic and Vaishnavi Venkatesh of Catawba. The duo dropped an 8-3 decision in the round of 32 to No. 1 seed Nikoline Gullacksen and Mariana Rameriez of Columbus State.

Stamereilers and Svozan competed in doubles and recorded an 8-6 win over Emma Arnal and Margarita Roshka of Newberry in the first round. The tandem suffered an 8-3 loss to No. 6 Ami Miya and Anna Wise of Catawba in the round of 32.

The Trojans return to the court next week for the Methodist Invitational on Oct. 4-6.
