UMO secures sweep on the road over Erskine, 3-0

DUE WEST, SC (Sept. 21) – After recording 49 kills and a season-high .406 hitting percentage, the Trojans cruised past Erskine on Saturday afternoon in a 3-0 sweep in Conference Carolinas play.

With the win, the University of Mount Olive women's volleyball team improves to 4-5 overall with a 1-1 record in conference action. The Trojans secured a fifth straight victory over the Flying Fleet including a trio of wins on the road. Meanwhile, Erskine falls to 4-6 this season behind a 1-1 mark in league play.

Junior Sam Widelski registered a game-high 15 kills on a .286 clip with four digs in three sets played. Senior Ashlyn Stone contributed 14 kills on an impressive .545 hitting percentage with two service aces, one block, and nine digs. Fellow senior Karoline Cox posted nine kills on a .750 clip with four digs while sophomore Kaitlyn Landis totaled seven kills, three aces, and four digs. Sophomore Lyndsay Reid guided the offense with 39 assists and eight digs.

Freshman Kacey Gore and Stone led the defensive effort with nine digs while Reid added eight digs in the Saturday win.

After exchanging points early in the first set, the Trojans totaled six of the following eight points with a pair of kills by Landis to hold a 12-7 advantage. Mount Olive continued its impressive offensive efficiency by scoring 10 unanswered points behind a trio of kills from Widelski, 22-7. The Flying Fleet managed to cut the deficit to 24-13 before a kill by Widelski sealed the set, 25-13.

In the second set, UMO established an early 7-6 edge before mounting a 9-1 run to build a significant 16-7 lead. Erskine answered with consecutive points to close the gap, but the Trojans tallied seven of the next nine points to hold a 23-11 advantage. The Flying Fleet rallied to trim the deficit to 24-20 late in the set before Stone delivered a kill, 25-20.

In the third set, the Trojans once again built an early edge with a 9-5 lead before scoring four of the following six points to remain ahead, 13-7. The sides traded the next seven points before Mount Olive went on a 6-1 run to extend the lead to 22-12. UMO recorded three of the final five points to claim the sweep, 25-14.

The Trojans continue Conference Carolinas play on Wednesday, Sept. 25, when they face Chowan on the road, starting at 6 p.m.
